  3. <hi style=afpcap>The predecessor to the highly successful P-40 series, the Curtiss P-36 was designed to meet an Army requirement for a single seat pursuit monoplane with several modern features including an enclosed cockpit and a retractable undercarriage. The P-36 was not ordered in vast quantity, although its design was further developed to bridge the gap between the elderly biplane fighters and the rapidly expanding developments of the mid '30s. Production encompassed the P-36A, P-36C and P-36G, with the tenth P-36A becoming the XP-40 prototype. </hi>
